Challah Dough Covers

the origin of our challah dough cover

Whenever my grandmother, or ‘Bobbie’ as I called her, baked challah, she would make a small dough ‘bird’ just for me. This was simply a knot of dough with a shorter end for the beak, a longer end for the tail, and two carefully placed raisin eyes. It never looked quite as bird-like when it was baked, but the gesture was one of pure grandmotherly love and I found myself hooked on Challah baking.

For years, when my recipe read: Cover dough with a cloth and set aside until doubled in bulk, I grabbed any clean kitchen towel for the job. One Friday, over a decade ago, I had a novel idea. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a cloth designed especially for this purpose? A pretty cloth draped over the bowl of rising dough on the kitchen counter would also add a touch of beauty to the uniquely women’s Mitzvah of Challah baking. With time, love & labor, the Challah Dough Cover was born. When released, the Challah Dough Cover won the New-Product-of-the-Year award at Kosherfest. It was available in one design, with a choice of 3 colors.
