Struggling with the new plastic flour bags? This simple flour bag cutting hack creates a clean pouring spout that makes measuring flour easier, more accurate, and less messy — especially when baking challah, bread, and other yeast recipes.
Have you noticed that many flour brands, including Blue Pantry from Bingo, have switched from traditional paper bags to plastic packaging?
While the bags keep the flour fresh, they're surprisingly difficult to open neatly. Tear them open, and flour goes everywhere. Cut straight across the top, and you often end up with an opening that's too wide to pour accurately.
After some trial and error, I found a simple three-step cutting method that creates a built-in pouring spout for cleaner, more controlled pouring.
Why the Spout Matters
If you're using an entire 5-pound bag of flour at once, almost any opening will work.
But many bakers only use part of a bag at a time. For example, when making challah, I often use a blend of high-gluten flour and spelt flour, so I need to pour out specific amounts of each.
A narrow pouring spout makes that much easier, and much less messy.
Better Measuring, Too
In a previous post, I discussed why it's more accurate to pour flour into a measuring cup rather than scoop it directly from the bag. Scooping compacts the flour and can lead to inaccurate measurements.
Creating a pouring spout makes it easy to pour flour into your measuring cup and level it off accurately.
The 3-Step Method
Follow the photos below to create a clean pouring spout- 1] Cut along the (imaginary) dashed lines that I've drawn here. 2] Cut along the (imaginary) Red dotted lines shown 3) DONE - The result is a neat opening that lets you pour flour with much better control.

It Works for those yeast bags, Too

This same method also works well on 16-ounce bags of yeast, such as Gefen's. The spout makes it easier to dispense smaller amounts without spills or waste.
A Packaging Designer's Suggestion
As a package designer, I'd love to see manufacturers print simple cutting guides directly on these bags. A few small lines showing where to cut would help bakers create a pouring spout in seconds and make the packaging much easier to use. Sometimes the smallest design details make the biggest difference.
