Everyone seems to have a different minhag (custom) regarding what to do with the small piece of dough removed after reciting the Hafrashat Challah blessing. I’ve learned that the simplest and preferred method is to burn it to a blackened crisp using your oven’s broil setting—bonus: it’s also a good way to test your smoke alarm. 😅

Two important points to keep in mind: A. The challah piece should be covered during the burning process. If you flatten it, it will still burn properly, even with a layer of foil on top. B. Never leave any other food in the oven while burning challah.

If burning it isn’t feasible, the second-best method (b’dieved) is to double-wrap the dough (an empty flour bag makes a convenient first layer) and place it in the trash.

As always, consult your Rav or Posek for guidance on the halachot specific to your situation. You can learn more about this very special mitzvah here: https://aish.com/challah-the-divine-dough
